چکیده

The oestrogenic activity of human colostrum (Lacassagne & Nyka, 1934) and the undoubted importance of colostrum for the neo-natal calf led us to test bovine colostrum for oestrogenic activity. Oestrogens found in animal tissues and body fluids during the past 23 years, in particular those in pregnant-cow bile (Pearlman, Rakoff, Cantarow & Paschkis, 1947), have always been phenolic in chemical nature, although occurring partly as water-soluble, ether-insoluble derivatives (conjugates) in the case of some urines (Cohen, Marrian & Odell, 1936; Schachter & Marrian, 1938). We therefore assumed that oestrogens in colostrum would occur either as the free phenols or as derivatives yielding the phenols on acid hydrolysis; and in either case be extractable by boiling methanol.

The effect of dietary bovine colostrum supplementation on serum malondialdehyde levels and antioxidant activity in alloxan-induced diabetic rats

Due to the range of its constituents, colostrum has been considered as a supplement for various diverse purposes. This study was conducted to examine the effect of supplementary bovine colostrum on serum malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidant activity (AOA) and glucose in a diabetic rodent model. Sixty male Wistar rats were divided into 10 groups of six rats each for 40 days as follows: non-diabeti...

بررسی اثرات آغوزگاو بر التیام زخم های باز در خوکچه هندی

Colostrum is the only natural source of transforming growth factors (TGF-α and β) and insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1 and 2) which play a role in wound healing. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of bovine colostrum on secondary wound healing in a guinea pig model.  Methods Lyophilized bovine colostrum powder, in the form of an ointment (10 % w/w dried powde...

Degalactosylated/Desialylated Bovine Colostrum Induces Macrophage Phagocytic Activity Independently of Inflammatory Cytokine Production.

BACKGROUND/AIM Colostrum contains antibodies, such as immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA) and immunoglobulin M (IgM), and, therefore, has potent immunomodulating activity. In particular, IgA has an O-linked sugar chain similar to that in the group-specific component (Gc) protein, a precursor of the Gc protein-derived macrophage-activating factor (GcMAF). In the present study, we inve...

Anti-HIV-1 antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity mediated by hyperimmune bovine colostrum IgG.

Antibodies with antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) activity play an important role in protection against HIV-1 infection, but generating sufficient amounts of antibodies to study their protective efficacy is difficult. HIV-specific IgG can be easily and inexpensively produced in large quantities using bovine colostrum. We previously vaccinated cows with HIV-1 envelope gp140 and eli...

Bovine colostrum in oral treatment of enterogenic endotoxaemia in rats

INTRODUCTION Under conditions of shock, bacteria and endotoxins in the intestines can traverse the mucosal barrier by translocation and enter the blood and lymphatic system. Immunoglobulins and lactoferrin have been reported to neutralize endotoxins and bacteria. We studied the essential therapeutic factors of colostrum products in an animal experiment. METHOD We simulated endotoxaemia by per...
